Roses on Wheels is part of the Roses for Children foundation

How do you turn limitations into challenges?

With that question in the back of their minds, documentary film maker Nina van Oort and her mother and co-founder of the Roses for Children Foundation Sil van Oort set out on a journey from the Netherlands to Portugal – on their bicycles.
Portugal holds the top position on the Kids Rights Index; the international ranking list that classifies countries based on their efforts to promote children’s rights. The Netherlands, on the other hand, has dropped significantly in recent years, landing on a dubious 15th place in 2017. In Portugal, Nina and Sil hope to find answer to the question how a country of relatively little affluence can do so much to give its children the future they deserve. And of the back of that, what the Dutch government can learn from its Portuguese counterpart.
Children’s curiosity and optimism drives this mother-daughter duo, even in their everyday lives. A partial transverse myelitis has decreased Sil’s mobility. Facing the challenges of the limitations of her body head on, she will cover the 3,000 kilometers by hand bike. Nina will document their journey and the children they run into along the way with her camera, asking them how they deal with adversity and limitations.
With this project, Nina and Sil hope to draw attention to children’s rights across the world, as well as to the positive and curious outlook so typical of children. At the same time, they hope to raise money for the Roses for Children Foundation. Originally an initiative by Dutch singer Herman van Veen, the foundation creates public monuments where people can mourn children who passed away. By creating space for grief, Roses for Children creates space for hope. For Roses for Children see www.rosesforchildren.nl
